Moving your website to new hosting
Moving a website is routine work when it is done in the right order. Here is how a move to Goji hosting works, what to prepare, and where the limits are.
It is an assisted move, not a button
Moving an existing website is an assisted move done with a person, not a one-click import. Ask before buying and Goji will say whether the site fits the plan. The old site stays online until the domain is switched, and a nameserver change can take up to 48 hours to spread.
How it works
- You tell the team where the site is now. They look at what it uses: files, databases, mailboxes, the PHP version and whether it runs WordPress.
- They check it fits the plan. Those figures are compared with the plan you are considering, so you find out before paying if you need a bigger one.
- The site is moved with you. Files and databases are copied to your new account and set up there. Your existing site stays online until you switch the domain.
- You point the domain. Change the nameservers at your registrar; allow up to 48 hours for it to spread.
What to prepare
- Where the site is hosted now and a way for the team to access it (they will say how).
- Which domain it runs on, and who holds the registrar login.
- How many mailboxes exist and whether you need their contents moved.
- The CMS and version (for example WordPress), plus the PHP version if you know it.
- A fresh backup of everything, kept on your own computer. Goji does not take backups of your website for you. The control panel gives you the tools to download your own.
Limits worth knowing
- It is done with a person, so ask before you buy and get the answer in writing.
- This site cannot promise zero downtime or a free move, because Goji does not state either, and we will not guess.
- Email needs care: mail follows DNS, so plan the switch so no mailbox goes dark.
Prefer to do it yourself?
That works too, from the control panel. Our migration checklist is host-neutral and covers files, database, email, testing and the DNS switch.
Migration questions
Is moving my website free?
Goji’s hosting page does not state a price for the move, so this site does not either. Ask before you buy and get the answer in writing.
Will my website go offline during the move?
Moving an existing website is an assisted move done with a person, not a one-click import. Ask before buying and Goji will say whether the site fits the plan. The old site stays online until the domain is switched, and a nameserver change can take up to 48 hours to spread. Anything currently running on the domain stops working while the nameservers change, so set the new site up first.
What does the team look at before moving a site?
Where it is now and what it uses: files, databases, mailboxes, the PHP version and whether it runs WordPress. Those figures are compared with the plan you are considering, so you learn before paying if you need a bigger one.
Do I have to buy first?
No. Goji’s advice is to ask before you buy and it will tell you honestly whether your site fits the plan you have in mind. Contact Goji.
Can I do it myself instead?
Yes, from the control panel, if you would rather. Our migration checklist covers the steps.
