The short answer
Email on your own domain ([email protected]) needs a mailbox on a mail server, MX records that send the domain’s mail there, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC records so receivers trust it. Goji hosting includes email accounts, webmail and spam filtering on every plan; how many mailboxes you get depends on the plan.
What you are setting up
An email address on your own domain looks professional and stays yours if you ever change provider. Three parts have to be in place:
- A mailbox that stores the messages, created on the mail server.
- MX records in DNS that tell the internet which server receives mail for your domain.
- Authentication records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) that let other mail systems check your messages are genuine.
What hosting gives you
Included on every plan: free SSL, DirectAdmin, webmail, spam filtering, catch-all email address, PHP version choice, phpMyAdmin, cron jobs, full DNS management and automatic setup.
The number of mailboxes depends on the plan:

The DNS records, in plain words
- MX: where incoming mail is delivered. If you move your website to new hosting but keep the mail elsewhere, keep the old MX records, or mail stops arriving.
- SPF (a TXT record): lists which servers may send mail for your domain. Missing or wrong SPF is a leading reason legitimate mail lands in spam.
- DKIM (a TXT record): a digital signature on each message. Your mail server generates the key; you publish it in DNS.
- DMARC (a TXT record): tells receivers what to do with mail that fails SPF or DKIM, and where to send reports. Start with a monitoring policy and tighten later.
Where these live depends on who runs your DNS; see nameservers vs DNS records.
Using your mailboxes
- Webmail works from any browser. It is the easiest place to start.
- Phone and desktop mail apps work too, using the incoming and outgoing server names your control panel shows for the mailbox.
- A catch-all address, if you enable it, receives mail sent to any name at your domain that has no mailbox; it catches typos but also invites spam.
Limits to ask about
Hosting mailboxes are built for normal business use rather than bulk mailing. Sending limits per hour or day, mailbox size and attachment size are set by the host; this site does not list them because Goji’s public pages do not, so ask before you rely on a particular volume. For newsletters and marketing mail, use a dedicated mailing service.
Do not lose mail during a move
Create the new mailboxes first, copy old messages across if you need them, and change the MX records last. Check that a test message sent from outside reaches the new mailbox before you switch off the old one.
Common questions
Why does my business email go to spam?
Most often the domain has no SPF or DKIM record, or they do not match the server actually sending the mail. Fix the records first; content is rarely the cause.
Can I keep my email elsewhere and only host the website here?
Yes. Leave the MX records pointing at the email provider and change only the website records.
