The short answer
A news portal needs hosting that copes with sudden traffic spikes, a fast-growing library of images and posts, and several editors publishing at once. On shared hosting that means page caching, a CDN in front of the site, compressed images, a plan without a bandwidth cap and enough storage and databases. If traffic stays high even with caching in place, the site has outgrown shared hosting and needs a VPS.
Why news sites are different
A company website gets steady, predictable traffic. A news portal does not: one breaking story shared on Facebook or Viber can bring more visitors in an hour than a normal day. News sites also grow every day, with new posts, new images and a database that keeps getting larger, and several editors and reporters log in at the same time.
Caching is not optional
- Page caching. Serve readers a ready-made copy of each article instead of building it from the database on every visit. On WordPress this is a caching plugin; use one, configured properly.
- A CDN in front of the site. A content delivery network keeps copies of pages, images, scripts and styles on servers close to readers and absorbs traffic spikes. Several CDNs, Cloudflare among them, offer a free tier that works with ordinary hosting.
- Keep logged-in pages separate. Editors see uncached pages; make sure readers do not.
Readers in Nepal, servers abroad
The servers are in a European data centre. There is no data centre in Nepal, so this is not the right choice if a site must be served from inside Nepal for legal, compliance or latency reasons. For a news site whose readers are mostly in Nepal, that makes the CDN and caching above more important, because cached copies are served from much closer to the reader than the origin server.
Images, fonts and storage
- Resize photos to the size they are displayed at and use WebP; original camera photos fill a hosting account quickly.
- Keep only the image sizes your theme actually uses.
- Nepali text needs a Devanagari font. A full web font file can be large; load only the weights you use, or let devices use their own Devanagari font for body text.
- Watch storage monthly: uploads, not code, are what fill a news site’s account.
The database keeps growing
Every article, revision and comment lands in the database. Limit stored post revisions, clear spam comments, and remove plugins that write logs to the database. A smaller database is faster to back up, restore and move.
Editors, security and backups
- Give every editor their own account with the lowest role they need, and turn on two-factor sign-in.
- Update the CMS, theme and plugins promptly; news sites are frequent targets.
- Back up daily and keep copies off the server. Goji does not take backups of your website for you. The control panel gives you the tools to download your own.

Choosing a plan for a news portal
Look for a plan with no monthly bandwidth cap, room for the images you will add over the next year, enough databases for the site and a staging copy, and enough mailboxes for your newsroom. The live limits of every plan:
| Starter | GrowthMost chosen | Pro | Ultimate | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price (NPR) | ||||
| Monthly billing | Rs 200 / month | Rs 250 / month | Rs 500 / month | Rs 1,500 / month |
| Yearly billing | Rs 1,800 / year | Rs 2,500 / year | Rs 4,000 / year | Rs 10,000 / year |
| Yearly, per month | Rs 150 | Rs 208 | Rs 333 | Rs 833 |
| Saved by paying yearly | Rs 600 (25%) | Rs 500 (17%) | Rs 2,000 (33%) | Rs 8,000 (44%) |
| What the plan allows | ||||
| Storage | 1 GB | 10 GB | 50 GB | Unlimited |
| Bandwidth | 10 GB | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Domains | 1 | 1 | 3 | Unlimited |

When shared hosting is no longer enough
If the site is slow or hits resource limits under normal traffic even with page caching, a CDN and optimised images, it is time for a VPS or a managed server. Shared hosting vs VPS explains the difference. The plans on this site are shared hosting only.
Common questions
Can a news portal run on shared hosting?
Yes, a small or medium news portal can, if it uses page caching, a CDN and optimised images. Very busy portals with constant high traffic usually need a VPS or a server of their own.
What happens when a story goes viral?
Without caching, every visit asks the server to build the page, and the site can slow down or stop responding. With page caching and a CDN, most visits are served from cached copies and the server does far less work.
